Information

I understand that starting therapy can bring up a lot of questions, and so have compiled a list of frequently asked questions to help you feel more comfortable and informed about the process. It is important to me that you feel comfortable - after all you will be talking about issues that may be highly personal and 'close to home' - please dont hesitate to contact me and ask any questions that may be bothering you.

Frequently asked questions

Is what I say really confidential- do you tell anybody?

This is the question that I am asked the most. The answer is the therapy room (or online session) is completely confidential. There are a couple of reasons why I would break that confidentiality - if I feel that you are in danger, or if I feel that you may be a danger to others, however if this were the case I would discuss this with you first. I also have a therapeutic supervisor, with whom cases are discussed to ensure that I am working ethically and for your benefit, these discussions are professional and anonymised, and so remain confidential.

What actually happens in therapy?

A lot of people wonder what's happening in therapy, well intrinsically it is just talking! The basis of really good therapy, is the therapeutic relationship and you feeling heard, believed, understood.

My commitment  to 'Less Woo, More You' approach means I create a bespoke therapy experience based on your individual needs. Trained in a Pluralistic approach, I mix and match therapies to suit you. Plus, with clinical hypnotherapy training, that can also be incorporated into your sessions if we both feel that it is appropriate, and that you would benefit from it.

Together we will work together to explore your feelings and emotions, build resilience and fill up your 'toolbox' so that you can continue on your path through life.

Will you tell my parents?/ Can I ask you what my child says?

No, to both of these questions. Counselling is confidential, and unless something extremely serious is suspected or is happening whereby I consider the individual to be either a danger to themselves, or a danger to others what is discussed remains confidential. It must be noted however, that if I am compelled via a court subpoena then I must submit any clinical notes that I hold.

How long does therapy take?

This one I'm afraid is almost impossible for me to answer - as it depends on you! The nature and 'severity' of the issue that you bring to therapy dictates how long therapy will last, but I can say that I will never 'keep' you in therapy, and will voice if I feel that we can go no further together, or if I feel that you no longer 'need' to access therapy. My goal is your emotional resilience and independence, the very last thing that I would wish is for you to be emotionally dependant upon therapy!

However, a common misconception is that therapy is a magic pill. It's important to understand that therapy can take time and commitment to see lasting results, and most clients commit to either weekly or fortnightly sessions.

What if I can't think of anything to say/don't want to talk?

In my therapy room, there are no right or wrong ways to 'do' therapy - that includes periods of quiet, they are actually really important in the therapy room. Have you ever had a 'feeling' about somebody or a specific situation - but no words have been spoken? That is non verbal communication - the little cues that we pick up, without even noticing. So even if you don't feel like talking, you are communicating something, and we can explore that when you feel comfortable to do so.
